Secret Gardens, Sunday, May 14th, 2017
The 16th year of the Secret Gardens of Oxton.
This popular community event, in our delightful Wirral conservation area, has raised over £240,000 for charities since 2001, so thank you for your support. This year’s event returned to our traditional date in May by popular demand.
Secret Gardens 2017 proved to be an extremely successful day – much due to our volunteers from the charities we worked with this year and Oxton Society members and the contribution of sponsors and Oxton businesses.
As the sun shone the numbers of visitors increased significantly:
- Programme sales were £20,100, up from £17,750 in 2016 (+13%)
- Overall income was £28,800, up from £25,400 in 2016 (+13%)
- Profit from the event (after expenses) was £20,700, up from £18,300 in 2016 (+13%)
- Distribution to charities- £4,000 each
This year our three charities were Helplink, The Shaftsbury Youth Club and The Wirral Fund for Children with Special needs.
We are grateful to the Hoylake Moviemakers (Brian and Keith) for once again producing this excellent film of this year’s event. This year they focused on our programme of entertainment and visitors enjoying themselves rather than the gardens themselves.
This film is from the YouTube “Wirral Channel” which also has a number of videos of local interest.
RHS Britain in Bloom Award
Secret Gardens and the Hanging Baskets will be part of this year’s entry into the RHS’s Britain in Bloom (North West) competition in the “large village” category, following our outstanding neighbourhood award last year. Entries will be judged on the basis of Horticulture, Environmental Responsiblity, and Community Involvement.
